The Bundeswehr has launched a huge investment program: the Bundestag Budget Committee has set the course for the operational readiness of the German armed forces by approving 38 so-called 25-million-euro bills.
“The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law (-> current news from the Ukraine war) and the increasing number of hybrid attacks on Europe make it unmistakably clear that Germany and the Alliance need armed forces capable of defending themselves, especially for effective deterrence,” reads a recent press release from the German Ministry of Defense. “With today’s decisions, the German Bundestag is ensuring that the soldiers of the Bundeswehr are equipped with urgently needed systems.” https://militaeraktuell.at/12-drohnen-lektionen-aus-dem-ukraine-krieg/ The representatives of the Budget Committee have enabled procurement projects for the armed forces as a whole, for each branch of the armed forces and in all dimensions. These include
- For the navy: Procurement of four additional U212CD submarines, go-ahead for the procurement of Class 127 frigates (pictured above), development of sea-to-air guided missiles (IDAS)
- For the army: procurement of rocket artillery with the Puls weapon system, reactive armor for the Puma, Digitization of land-based operations(D-LBO digitization of land-based operations, IT information technology system integration), thermal imaging observation and thermal imaging target devices
- For the Air Force: further procurement of Patriot guided missiles, IRIS-T service life extension
- For the cyber sector: the provision of data center capacities and cloud-based infrastructure
- For the support area: the procurement of additional protected and unprotected vehicles, interchangeable loading systems and regeneration modular medical equipment.
Even before today’s meeting of the Budget Committee, 59 major projects were approved this year, compared to 55 projects last year. Following today’s decisions, this brings the total to 97.
The procurement projects now approved, amounting to around 21 billion euros, will be financed via the special fund (around 7 billion euros), via Section 14 and, if submitted, via Section 60 (Patriot reprocurement).
