The hydrographic survey vessel “Zr.Ms. Luymes” of the Dutch Navy will serve as the flagship of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1). This unit is one of two permanent NATO fleet formations consisting of mine countermeasures ships.

The Belgian Navy, which has been working closely with the Dutch Navy for years, is in command of the fleet.

The aim of the minehunting fleet is to clear the assigned operational area in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic of sea mines and other explosives. This ensures that both the ships of the partner navy and civilian shipping can operate and pass safely. In addition to its main task, the fleet also demonstrates military strength through its presence, which is intended to have a deterrent effect. In addition, regular joint training takes place within the association in order to maintain a high level of operational readiness.

Hydrographic survey vessel “Zr.Ms. Luymes”

The “Zr.Ms. Luymes” is a hydrographic survey vessel that produces precise maps of the seabed, fairways and harbors. Whether the ship will continue these tasks in the near future is unclear and depends on the respective operational requirements. Thanks to its ability to use unmanned systems, the Luymes is suitable for a wide range of missions. Later, the minehunter “Zr.Ms. Schiedam” minehunter of the Dutch navy will also join the fleet.
