As part of a European consortium, the Viennese company Viewpointsystem has been awarded funding from the European Defense Fund (EDF) for the research project “Advanced Biometrics In Training and Simulation” (ABITS). The research project will receive 2.23 million euros, of which Viewpointsystem will be allocated around 580,000 euros.
With the European Defense Fund, the EU is investing in industrial, pan-European cooperation projects in the defense sector for the first time. A total of 1.2 billion euros will be used for 61 research and development projects. The selected companies and consortia will use EU funding to research and develop the next generation of innovative defense technologies, including high-end large-scale defense equipment, military clouds, AI, semiconductors, quantum technology, new materials, cyberspace or medical countermeasures. 43% of the companies involved in the selected projects are SMEs.
The ABITS research project of Viewpointsystem (Austria), Guardiaris (Slovenia) and Smartex (Italy) will develop a data-driven tactical training solution for indoor use. Based on non-invasive physiological sensors, the psychophysical state of the trainee will be determined and integrated into the training simulation loop. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Austrian, Slovenian and Danish Ministries of Defense.
“We are honored to be part of this pan-European collaboration and to be able to contribute to technological innovation in the defense sector with our eye tracking technology,” explains Nils Berger, CEO and founder of Viewpointsystem. “With the funding, we will expand our system and, above all, invest in the compatibility of the data so that we get an all-encompassing picture of the psychophysical state of the trainee.”
Viewpointsystem uses the “VPS 19” eye tracking data glasses for the project. The eye data collected is combined with biometric data from other sensors and provides important insights into the trainee’s attention, stress and cognitive load, for example. Guardiaris, which specializes in tailor-made training solutions for the defence industry, develops the training environment using patented laser-free LED technology and a realistic environment simulation. Smartex will use intelligent textiles with integrated sensors to collect further biometric data and feed it into the training circuit.
