The US armed forces can look forward to a new ammunition type: on December 20, the Joint Program Executive Officer for Armaments & Ammunition (JPEO A&A) approved the inclusion of the 120 millimetre Advanced Multi-Purpose (AMP) cartridge M1147 in full rate production.

This decision authorizes the production of this projectile beyond the initial low-rate production, which will not only ensure that the US Army’s ammunition requirements are met, but also those of its international partners. The M1147 provides M1 Abrams tank crew members with new capabilities for engaging Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) teams and breaching Double Reinforced Concrete Walls (DRCW), combining the capabilities of four conventional projectiles into one. This is achieved through the use of a programmable multi-mode fuze that allows selection between three modes of operation, including point detonation, delayed point detonation and air detonation. https://militaeraktuell.at/trump-plant-abzug-von-20-000-soldaten-europa/ “The approval of the full production rate for the M1147 AMP round is a significant achievement that reflects our team’s years of dedication and our commitment to providing Soldiers with the best munitions available,” said Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, JPEO A&A. He continued, “As we continue to produce this advanced projectile, the M1147 will play a critical role in providing superiority capabilities and increased lethality for the M1 Abrams main battle tank.” The consolidation of four rounds into one increases logistical efficiency, simplifies the Abrams’ basic equipment and solves the problem of stockpile obsolescence.
