The US Army has BAE Systems with the production of M109A7 self-propelled howitzers and M992A3 ammunition carriers. The contract is worth just under €390 million and deliveries are due to be completed in 2025. The Army already commissioned BAE Systems with M109A7 production in 2017. In total, the two contracts are worth almost 2 .3 billion euros.
The M109A7 is the latest version of BAE Systems’ M109 howitzer family and the primary indirect fire support system for the US Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCT). The vehicle has been made even more capable in recent years with some improved capabilities in terms of size, weight, power, cooling, readiness, force protection and survivability.
The new design of the M109A7 includes several improved features: chassis, engine, transmission, suspension, steering system, high-voltage architecture and survivability have all been enhanced. The vehicle is also designed to support higher-caliber, longer-range cannons that are critical to achieving the US Army’s longer-range launch targets.
