The Bundeswehr University Munich (UniBw M) and the Planning Office of the Bundeswehr have maintained an intensive professional and scientific exchange for many years and work together in a spirit of trust on numerous levels.
With a view to achieving common goals in the context of national and alliance defense and the security policy challenges of the coming years, this solid basis of both institutions is to be further strengthened and expanded. On July 22, University President Eva-Maria Kern and the Head of the Bundeswehr Planning Office, Major General Stefan Lüth, signed a declaration of intent to this end.
The declaration of intent has now laid the foundation for intensifying cooperation, sharing expertise and resources, reducing bureaucracy, developing joint strategies, identifying potential and promoting innovation.
The possible fields of cooperation are broad and include subjects such as computer science, information technology, aerospace engineering and business and organizational sciences.
The UniBw M supports the Planning Office in answering scientific questions as far as possible and with available resources within the framework of scientific research with specialist scientific expertise. “This makes an important contribution to the cold-start capability of the armed forces in the context of the turnaround,” as stated in a recent UniBw M press release.

The Planning Office addresses specific fields of research and provides a framework for the practical promotion of young academics at the UniBw M. To this end, students are offered opportunities for internships and specialist support for qualification work (Bachelor’s and Master’s theses and doctorates). The declared aim of the signatory institutions is to permanently consolidate the cooperation by drawing up a cooperation agreement and establishing permanent knowledge transfer bridges between the UniBw M and the Planning Office.
“Furthermore, this declaration of intent underlines the willingness to assume joint responsibility for the security of the Federal Republic of Germany and to make an individual contribution to the defense readiness of NATO defense readiness”, as the press release concludes.
