The modernized Vomp helicopter base in Tyrol was ceremoniously handed over to the air force on Friday. The investment, which cost around one million euros, included the helicopter hangar, a garage with a canopy and the extension of the administration wing. In addition, 800,000 euros were spent on self-sufficiency measures at the site.
The measures taken will enable all helicopter types of the Austrian Armed Forces to be stationed, refueled and technically serviced in Tyrol.
Vomp site secured
Along with the ageing helicopter fleet, the Vomp site has also been called into question several times over the past two decades. There were plans to sell the site three times. Since 2015, the helicopter base has no longer been permanently manned – military helicopters and flying personnel have only been stationed on site when necessary. Currently, one helicopter is stationed in Vomp for around 26 weeks per year.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “So far, we have been able to complete every assistance mission in full – the Tyroleans know that the armed forces will not let them down.”
The Vomp helicopter base is just a ten-minute flight from the highest military training area in Austria, Lizum/Walchen. In 2023, the governors of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Anton Mattle and Markus Wallner, called for two helicopters to be permanently stationed in Vomp.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner promised to examine the proposals carefully. A decision should not be made before 2028.
