In south-east Estonia, preparatory work for the construction of the first five bunkers as part of the development of the Baltic Defense Line began shortly before the turn of the year. In the next phase, a further 23 bunkers are to be built in the coming months. In total, Estonia plans to install up to 600 bunkers in north-east and south-east Estonia by the end of 2027.

“It is pleasing to see that, in addition to the barrier systems already delivered, we are now making further tangible progress in the construction of a comprehensive Baltic Defense Line with the bunkers,” explained Kadi-Kai Kollo, Head of Infrastructure at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI). A total of 28 bunkers are planned in the first phase. “We will then move on to the procurement and construction of the next 600 bunkers, which are scheduled for completion by the end of 2027 at the latest.”

The Chief Engineer of the Estonian Defence Forces (EDF), Lieutenant Colonel Ainar Afanasjev, emphasized the importance of careful site selection for bunkers and trenches. This must be in line with the defense plans of the Estonian armed forces as well as with the specific terrain characteristics. “It is crucial that these decisions are well thought out and closely coordinated with the units,” said Afanasjev.

According to him, the bunkers primarily serve to protect personnel from direct hits by 152-millimeter artillery ammunition, as used by the the armed forces of the Russian Federation widely used by the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

The construction of a 3.4-kilometre-long anti-tank ditch is also due to begin shortly. A total of up to 40 kilometers of such anti-tank obstacles are planned.

The Baltic Defense Line should be fully completed by the end of 2027 at the latest.
