The Armed Forces continues to invest in its sustainability and self-sufficiency. In future, photovoltaic systems for sustainable energy generation are to be installed on military properties in all new construction projects and building renovations. Most recently, these were installed in the Van Swieten barracks and at the Allentsteig military training area.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “One of the federal government’s main goals is the fight against climate change. The Austrian Armed Forces are also making their contribution to ecological national defense. One of our many contributions to a sustainable armed forces is the installation of photovoltaic systems in order to take a further step towards self-sufficient barracks and a self-sufficient armed forces. In this way, we are contributing to the fight against climate change and at the same time creating a modern armed forces and an attractive employer.”
In future, photovoltaic systems will be installed in all new buildings and general refurbishment projects of the Austrian Armed Forces. Until now, the installation was only carried out for specific projects. Most recently, photovoltaic systems were installed as part of the construction of the new position building in the Van Swieten barracks in Vienna and during the the general refurbishment of the crew quarters at the Allentsteig military training area. were put into operation. Future projects in which photovoltaic systems will also be installed include the construction of the large barracks in Villach and two new buildings at the Brumowski airbase in Langenlebarn and the Fiala-Fernbrugg airbase in Aigen am Ennstal.
The Austrian Armed Forces take a comprehensive approach to environmental protection. In addition to the construction of photovoltaic systems, biodiversity is also protected on military training areas. The Allentsteig military training area is part of the “Natura 2000 network of protected areas”. Other measures include the “Klimateller” project, which ensures that food in barracks is more regional and seasonal, sustainable mobility through a fleet of e-vehicles and sustainable procurement. Training courses provide information on the topics of environmental protection, sustainability, ecology and waste separation and raise awareness.
