The country’s best athletes were honored at the 27th Lotterien Sporthilfe Gala, which took place on October 12 in the Wiener Stadthalle. Among the nominees were numerous top athletes from the Austrian Armed Forces, some of whom were able to take home the coveted “Niki”.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner was delighted with the awards: “I am very pleased about the awards for our army athletes. The ‘Niki’ is visible proof of the great performances achieved by our military athletes. Even in uncertain times, it is important that we offer our athletes an appropriate stage and celebrate their sporting successes together with them.”

“Sportswoman of the Year” was awarded to a competitive athlete from the Austrian Armed Forces: platoon leader Eva Pinkelnig, the overall World Cup winner and World Championship silver medalist in ski jumping, relegated mountain bike world champion Corporal Mona Mitterwallner, also a sports soldier, and defending champion Anna Gasser to second and third place.

The winner among the disabled athletes was Thomas Frühwirth, a military athlete, who beat Johannes Aigner, also a military athlete, and Markus Salcher. Frühwirth is a paratriathlon world champion, hand cyclist and European and world paracycling champion. A brief summary of his successes: World Championship bronze was followed by European Championship gold and because pure handbike races are not enough, the Styrian also crowned himself with the Ironman World Championship title. https://militaeraktuell.at/saab-erhaelt-von-bae-systems-auftrag-fuer-cv90/ For more than 60 years, the Austrian Armed Forces has been supporting Austrian competitive sport for more than 60 years and provides a home for 495 athletes in the ten Army Performance Sports Centers of the Army Sports Center. There are currently 280 jobs available for athletes and 20 places for disabled athletes.
