Thales has signed a cooperation agreement with Boreal, a subsidiary of MISTRAL, for the production of loitering munitions. Boreal specializes in unmanned aerial vehicles and is particularly known for its powerful long-range drones of the Boreal Aerial Vehicle type.
The new loitering ammunition (MTO-LP1) was developed to meet the requirements of France and other NATO-forces. With a range of several hundred kilometers, the system can be deployed by two people in less than 30 minutes. Up to ten missiles can be launched simultaneously for coordinated operations.
The planned development roadmap envisages the first operational capability in 2026, with an annual production of 1,000 warheads. Further developments with extended protection functions, more complex mission profiles and a variable effector portfolio for precise long-range attacks will follow from 2027. Initial flight tests are scheduled for summer 2025.
