The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has Lockheed Martin a few days ago a follow-up contract for the development of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon system. This indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract supports the further development of the THAAD weapon system’s capabilities over the next five years – with two extension options for a performance period of up to ten years. The contract has a maximum value of 2.68 billion euros if both options are exercised.
“The battle-proven THAAD missile defense is an effective deterrent against a range of ballistic missile threats, and we look forward to continuing to expand its capabilities for our current and future customers,” said Dan Nimblett, vice president of Upper Tier Integrated Air and Missile Defense at Lockheed Martin. “THAAD is an important component of our missile defense architecture, and this vote of confidence from MDA reaffirms our commitment to jointly deliver enhanced defense capabilities against emerging missile threats.”

This latest contract follows on from the original THAAD advanced capability development contract awarded in 2012 and will build on the current capabilities of the weapon system. The scope of the development projects will be determined by separate orders over the course of the performance period.
THAAD provides an effective, combat-proven missile defense against short, medium and long-range ballistic missile threats. The THAAD weapon system has a perfect flight test record of 17 to 17 interceptions. In addition, the THAAD weapon system has been successfully integrated into PAC-3 MSE.
