Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defense Procurement Agency (FMV) to equip the Swedish Navy’s five Visby corvettes with the Sea Ceptor air defense system from MBDA air defense system. The upgrade has a total value of around 150 million euros and will enhance the air defense capabilities of Sweden and NATO air defense capabilities.
The order is part of FMV’s long-term modernization plan for the maintenance and further development of the Visby class. The new system enables the defense of a larger airspace and allows the engagement of more distant air targets than with the previous on-board weapons.
“This upgrade strengthens both Swedish and NATO air and missile defense by increasing the operational capability of the armed forces and enabling operations across the entire conflict spectrum. With the new system on board, the Visby corvettes will remain a key element of the Swedish naval forces in the future,” explains Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s Kockums business area.
FMV had previously ordered the Sea-Ceptor system directly from MBDA. Saab will start modifying the ships and integrating the system from the beginning of 2026.
