“I pledge!” With these words, around 200 Guards and military police recruits took their oath of allegiance at a ceremonial swearing-in at Jodok-Fink-Platz in Vienna-Josefstadt. The military ceremony was rounded off with a concert by the guard music.

The guard music opened the concert with the sounds of the concert march “We are heroes”. Fascinating for the numerous visitors and performed to perfection, the musicians presented their skills at the start of this festive event. Appropriate financial resources are required to fulfill the tasks of the Austrian Armed Forces. At less than 0.6 percent of the gross domestic product, Austria spends less than any other comparable country in Europe. The normal regular budget of the Austrian Armed Forces must therefore be significantly increased so that comprehensive refurbishment and urgently needed purchases can be made. “These procurements will directly benefit all of you,” said Vienna Military Commander Kurt Wagner in his speech.

District leader Veronika Mickel-Göttfert explained the connection to the place of the inauguration. Jodok Fink, Vice-Chancellor in Karl Renner’s state government, was an advocate of democracy. “The armed forces are important for democracy. When necessary, soldiers in the armed forces help to maintain order and security in Austria. In doing so, they safeguard the democratic freedoms of the citizens,” said the district leader. Christian Hursky, Member of Parliament, discussed the guarantee of security in the Republic and the necessity of the financial resources required for this. “Because when you go on a mission for us today, it’s also about your personal safety. As politicians, we have to ensure that you are well trained and receive the best equipment.”

A delegation of recruits approached the insignia to recite the pledge of allegiance with their comrades. With the pledge, the soldiers promised the population that they would provide effective protection and assistance at all times. After the ceremony, the visitors were able to sample the quality of the catering provided by the armed forces in the troop kitchen.
