Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil has appointed Brigadier Rudolf Striedinger as the new head of the Counterintelligence Office. Striedinger is currently the military commander of Lower Austria and will take up his new post on April 4. Brigadier Ewald Iby, who has been in charge of the Counterintelligence Office since 2014, will become deputy head.

Minister Doskozil: “Especially in challenging times in terms of security policy, the military intelligence services are of particular importance for the security of the country. The threat of Islamist terrorism, to name just one example, requires great efforts and a high quality of service. That is why it was important to me to make the decision on the leadership of the domestic intelligence service quickly.” “Brigadier Striedinger,” Doskozil continued, “is characterized by competence, leadership and reliability. He is the right man to head the Counterintelligence Office.” Rudolf Striedinger joined the Landwehrstammregiment 32 in 1983 as an officer in the Jägertruppe. After completing the general staff course, he was responsible for the management staff in the Ministry of Defense and also for coordinating the Inspector General of Troops. In 2002, he was appointed Head of the General Staff Office and was reappointed Head of the General Staff Department in 2008. Striedinger gained experience abroad as commander of a multinational brigade with EUFOR/ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has been Military Commander of Lower Austria since 2011. He is married and has six children. The Counterintelligence Office is responsible for averting threats to military security. It obtains information on efforts and activities that could lead to intentional attacks against the life and health of persons, infrastructure and classified military information and presents this to the political and military leadership.
