Contrary to media perception, the number of global victims of terrorism fell for the second year in a row last year. According to the Global Terrorism Index of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), 25,673 people lost their lives in terrorist attacks in 2016. This was 13% fewer than in the previous year and 22% fewer than in 2014. The highest number of fatalities by far was 9,765 in Iraq, while experts put the economic damage caused by terrorism at around 80 billion euros.
