Even as a “one-eyed man”, Brigadier Klaus Jäger did not miss the opportunity to personally open this year’s traditional public shooting event of the Army Logistics School at the Stammersdorf shooting range a few days ago. Having undergone surgery on his left eye just two days earlier – and therefore having it covered “pirate-style” – the new and old commander of the multi-faceted training facility “in den Gabrissen” welcomed around 110 participants as well as numerous guests and friends.
Brigadier Jäger recently returned to his roots as a commander: in 1985, he began his career as a platoon leader at the former Army Supply School. 15 years later, until 2006, he returned as an economic officer under Brigadier Jocham. Since May 1, after completing his general staff training, he has now been in charge of the now renamed Army Logistics School for the third time – this time as Commandant.
Speaking to Militär Aktuell on the sidelines of the event, he emphasized how much of a “pleasure and honour” it was for him to be able to work here. The staff are “the finest”, the challenge of teaching “fundamentally positive”, as “you can see the successes in practice”.
A well-established fixture
The annual shooting event was once initiated by Brigadier Jocham and has since developed – as Brigadier Jäger explains – “into a well-established fixture in the logistics landscape, particularly in military logistics”. It is “not just about shooting, but also about communication within a logistics network. There are partners from other departments, as well as representatives from the central office. You might shoot for a quarter of an hour, but in the remaining three hours you can network excellently – often with 100 to 200 people present.”
Militär Aktuell was invited by a long-standing employee of the school, Wolfgang Frühwirth, who is also President of the associated association “Friends of Army Logistics”. Representatives from various departments and companies are active in this association, which organizes one or two events every six months.
Three stations
As usual, the approximately 110 participating guests tried their hand at three stations:
- 9-millimeter Glock pistol at 10 meters,
- Assault rifle 77 at 200 meters,
-
Egg hand grenade throw at 15 meters (10 meters for ladies).
A confirmation was issued for participants with a weapon ownership card, which is recognized as mandatory training. Militär Aktuell itself landed in the solid midfield of the participants – in the end, however, the weight of the practice hand grenades was somewhat underestimated.
