Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi used the World Economic Forum in Davos to once again appeal for support. Topics included the possible deployment of peacekeeping troops, with Zelenskyi also naming a specific number for the first time. He expects Trump to support a “just” end to the war.
The new US President Donald Trump has not managed to end the Ukraine war as announced (-> current news from the Ukraine war) in just one day, but the debate about securing a possible ceasefire has long been underway. French President Emmanuel Macron had previously brought up the idea of deploying a European peacekeeping force and Selenskyj has now taken up the idea at the World Economic Forum in Davos (-> Austria’s armed forces secure the airspace) once again. According to the Ukrainian president, “at least 200,000 soldiers would be needed” to secure peace if the worst came to the worst.
Germany, France, Poland, Italy and the UK would probably have to provide the bulk of this force, but the other European countries would also have a duty. However, no contribution is expected from the USA. Donald Trump had already announced before taking office that he would not deploy US troops for such a scenario.
Selensky hopes that US President Trump will bring the Russian war of aggression to a “just” end, as he said. However, a sustainable end is more important than a quick one. “We want to end the war this year – not just quickly, but above all fairly and sustainably. We want Ukrainians to be able to return to their homes, live and work in safety.”
