Just one day after the announcement of the launch of two new products – the the weaponized camcopters S-101 and S-301 – announced Schiebel also announced a new order from MDA Space. This involves equipping the Halifax-class ships of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) with up to six Camcopter S-100s.

According to Schiebel’s press release, the Camcopter S-100 has met the RCN’s strict requirements for UAS for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) requirements. As a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) platform that can be used day and night and in all weather conditions, it provides real-time ISTAR situational awareness imagery from a distance of up to 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) from the ship.

The system supports a comprehensive range of maritime payloads, including electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, maritime radar, automatic identification systems (AIS) and transponder technology for friend or foe (IFF) detection. “The ISTAR-UAS project will significantly enhance the RCN’s ability to detect and monitor potential maritime threats at home and abroad,” said Schiebel.

“We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract and honored to support the Royal Canadian Navy’s ISTAR capabilities,” said Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of Schiebel Group. “With its operationally proven maturity and ability to integrate multiple sensors required for the demanding maritime domain, the Camcopter S-100 is ideally suited to meet the RCN’s evolving requirements for continuous maritime reconnaissance and situational awareness.”
