Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Burgstaller was entrusted with the command of the radar battalion at the beginning of June. With the appointment by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner as battalion commander of the radar battalion, the ceremonial assumption of command took place a few days ago under Covid-19 restrictions in the Schwarzenberg barracks.
With the insignia of the battalion, the deputy commander of air surveillance, Colonel Markus Kronreif, handed over command to Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Burgstaller. After his retirement from the Theresian Military Academy in 2004, his first assignment was as a training officer and deputy company commander with the former Reconnaissance Battalion 2 in Wals. When the reconnaissance battalion was disbanded and he was transferred to the radar battalion, Burgstaller underwent training in radar operations.

He subsequently became commander of the low-flying radar detection system in 2010 and deputy commander of the radar battalion in 2014. In 2018, he completed a Master’s degree in Military Leadership at the University of Applied Sciences. To date, the experienced Austrian officer has been deployed abroad in international missions such as Kosovo, Afghanistan and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lieutenant Colonel Burgstaller was born on November 26, 1975 in Spittal an der Drau, is married, father of two children and lives in Thalgau. He spends his free time with his family and doing outdoor activities.
