On August 15, a so-called “composite cutting ceremony” was held at the Saab site in Karlskrona to mark the start of cutting the first construction materials for four planned masts for new Finnish Navy ships. The masts will be made from the same composite material as the Swedish Visby-class corvettes, for which Saab is one of the world’s leading manufacturers.

In September 2019, the company signed Saab signed a contract for the delivery and integration of the combat system for the Finnish Navy’s four new Pohjanmaa-class ships (known as the Squadron 2020 program). Saab is one of the subcontractors for the ships, which are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2029. The masts that Saab manufactures for the Finnish Navy are roughly equivalent in height to a five-story building. “This was an important day and we are proud to be a part of further strengthening the capabilities of the Finnish Navy. We look forward to delivering our world-leading composite solutions and combat systems in close cooperation with our Finnish customer,” says Mats Wicksell, Vice President and Head of Business Area at Saab Kockums AB. https://militaeraktuell.at/eine-zweite-black-hawk-staffel-fuer-das-bundesheer/ Saab has many years of experience in developing and building ships in composite materials, such as carbon fiber, and has already delivered composite solutions for various classes of ships. The main advantage of these materials is their low weight and reduced radar signature. In addition, carbon fiber is considered a sustainable alternative to conventional building materials, the material does not corrode and it reduces fuel consumption, allowing a greater proportion of a ship’s total weight to be used for additional functions.
