Saab together with industry partner Conlog Oy, announced a modular, secure and rapidly deployable digital tower (r-TWR) for flexible air traffic control operations.

Air bases are easy for a potential adversary to identify and are under permanent threat in the event of a conflict. Air forces around the world are therefore increasingly looking for ways to maintain their operational capability in the event of an emergency through mobile or remote-controlled measures. With this in mind, Saab has now unveiled its new r-TWR Deployable, a mobile and digital control tower that combines high availability, modularity and flexibility for various operational scenarios.

The system is easy to transport, quick to set up and, in principle, can be used in all climatic conditions.

The system is operational within an hour and can be remotely controlled from a secure location at any base or connected to a central facility hundreds of kilometers away. The highly qualified personnel required for control can thus be kept in safe areas and the possible applications extend beyond military conflicts: for example, the system can also be used to quickly set up a flight infrastructure in a country hit by natural disasters in order to carry out international aid missions.

The system includes everything needed to set up air traffic management on an existing or temporary runway and can be quickly transported by road or rail on one or two standardized trailers or in a cargo aircraft the size of a C-130 Hercules. https://youtu.be/jB9OPpC-Rck “We can offer a mobile digital tower for military and disaster relief operations as early as 2023 to meet today’s variety of missions where speed can be key. Our experience in air traffic management and defense solutions gives us the necessary expertise to create the new capability,” says Peter Engberg, Head of Saab’s Traffic Management business area. Juha Moisio, CEO of Conlog Oy, says: “We are delighted to work with Saab and provide our extremely mobile and durable expandable shelters and our latest hydraulic mast system as the basis for this very interesting system. With our experience in the most demanding conditions, we can offer solutions for a wide range of circumstances.” https://militaeraktuell.at/rheinmetall-asc-d-nl-beschaffen-caracal/ The r-TWR Deployable can be customized and integrated with various Saab features. These include the TactiCall voice communication system for secure and cyber-secure communications, the Giraffe 1X lightweight multi-mission surveillance radar with drone tracker capability, Sirius Compact passive surveillance for tactical applications and Barracuda stealth for a reduced multispectral signature.
