The Swedish defense company Saab is strengthening its involvement in the space sector and is taking a strategic stake in the space technology company Pythom. The startup with Swedish roots is developing lightweight, rapidly deployable launch vehicles that are designed to make access to space more flexible, cost-effective and robust.
Pythom operates in both Sweden and the US and is committed to a rocket development concept based on simplicity, low cost and rapid deployment – characteristics that fit seamlessly into Saab’s long-term vision of a decentralized and robust launch infrastructure.
According to a recent press release, Saab is pursuing several strategic goals with this investment: Closing capability gaps in the space domain, accelerating innovation in key security-related areas and expanding Swedish space expertise. At the same time, Saab wants to contribute to the development of new space-related defense capabilities that are in demand worldwide.
“Pythom’s vision and technology offer a unique opportunity to further develop the space capabilities of Sweden and its partners in a pragmatic and future-oriented way. We are proud to support their path to the first orbital flight,” explains Marcus Wandt, Head of Group Strategy and Technology at Saab.
Saab is investing almost ten million euros in Pythom and is the lead investor in the current financing round. The funds are intended in particular to drive forward the further development and rapid deployment of the Pythom carrier systems.
