At Enforce Tac in Nuremberg, the German ammunition manufacturer RWS presented a new type of ammunition for drone defense: Urban Drone Defense ammunition (UDD). The UDD is a cost-effective and efficient solution for defending against small commercial drones. The 7.62×51 caliber ammunition is available in two variants for different ranges and areas of application.

As can be seen at the moment, especially but not only in Ukraine, it is becoming increasingly important to have adequate means of rapid and effective defense against smaller drones. This is precisely where RWS comes in, for example to better protect public events or targets in densely populated areas. With the UDD ammunition, DIY and commercial drones can be neutralized in urban areas – while at the same time minimizing background and personal danger. The danger zone has been reduced by around 80 percent compared to conventional 7.62×51 caliber ammunition.

The special short-range ammunition with polymer projectile was developed for 7.62×51 caliber machine guns with high cadence. With a lightweight but robust design, UDD is designed for optimal performance in a variety of drone defense applications. Through the targeted use of low-emission components, such as the patented SINTOX primer, the company has also succeeded in reducing pollutant emissions to a minimum.

RWS also announced that the UDD is available in two different versions. One is the UDD LIGHT with a blue polymer projectile, which is suitable for shorter distances of up to 100 meters in densely populated inner-city areas, and the other is the UDD HEAVY with a grey polymer projectile, which was designed for medium distances of up to 300 meters – for example for defending suburban or rural areas.
