Russian troops have deployed along the Bachmut to Chassiv Yar a tunnel around two kilometers long made of wooden poles, nets and wire mesh. This construction is intended to protect the central supply route from Ukrainian drone attacks.

Bachmut was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the war from August 2022 to May 2023. Ukrainian troops held the western edge of the city until the very end before they were forced to retreat. The city was also one of the first major testing grounds for modern drone warfare: for months, Ukrainian drone pilots provided aerial and artillery reconnaissance that significantly delayed the Russian advance. Today, there is nothing left of the city with its former 70,000 inhabitants but uninhabitable ruins.

From summer 2022 to spring 2023, there was fierce fighting for Bachmut, and the front line currently runs around ten kilometers west of the city.

The front line is currently only around ten kilometers west of the city in Chassiv Yar. The newly constructed network tunnel along the connecting road is now specifically designed to intercept FPV kamikaze drones that regularly target Russian supply vehicles.
