A few days ago, a new type of crashed UAV was discovered in the Kiev oblast. A video now published by Russia contained some further information about the previously unknown drone. The multifunctional UAV is referred to as Gerbera (Гербера) (“the tanner”).

The Russian video claims that this UAV can be used for electronic reconnaissance, as a kamikaze drone or as a false target for air defense. Structurally, the drone is made of foam and plywood and is optimized for cheap mass production. According to Ukrainian findings, the drone flies at an altitude of around 20 to 30 meters at a speed of up to 150 km/h.

Two 3/4G antennas and a modem with a SIM card were found in the crashed drone. This is used to transmit video via the Ukrainian mobile network and onwards to the operator. https://militaeraktuell.at/bundesheer-startet-eigenen-sportkanal/ The theory so far is that the drones are intended to scout the locations of Ukrainian air defense systems, in particular those of the mobile groups equipped with a variety of calibers that hunt down the Shahed drones night after night. Without a warhead, the drone is said to have a range of around 300 kilometers; with a warhead, the distance is estimated to be within 100 kilometers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=IFxdWQF0SRFpgmw2&v=zXICcztQkec&feature=youtu.be The video published by Russia shows that the drone can be manually remote-controlled like an FPV drone. Relay drones known as “repeaters” are probably used for this purpose, which serve to extend the propagation of the radio signal at low altitudes. The video also shows a swarm flight. Ukraine suspects that the Gerbera UAV, like Geran-2 (Shahed), was used in the special economic zone “Alabuga” in Tartastan is manufactured.
