The British Royal Navy (RN) has signed a contract with the Danish software Danish software company Systematic for a further five years. The company will continue to take the technical lead in the development of the military message formats (Message Text Formats, MTFs) and the creation of the NATO message catalog (APP-11).

The current edition of the catalog includes 407 message formats that cover the entire spectrum of military operations – from strategic communications to mission orders and NBC protection messages to routine unit-level logistics requests. The formats are designed to work in low bandwidth or satellite-free environments – and are suitable for both human and automated processing.

The Navy Digital Division of the Royal Navy is responsible for the maintenance of APP-11 on behalf of NATO. By commissioning Systematic, the RN is ensuring that this task is carried out competently and reliably.

In addition to catalog production, Systematic also supports the Royal Navy in various NATO working groups. These groups develop and update MTFs for numerous NATO documents in which structured text information is required. MTFs are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the context of Federated Mission Networking (FMN) – for example in the coordination of loosely coupled command and control systems on the battlefield or cooperation with NATO and non-NATO partners in joint operations.
