The system developed by Rheinmetall FEDERATES (Federated Ecosystem of European Simulation Assets for Training and Decision Support) consortium, led by Rheinmetall as coordinator, has been selected by the European Union for a grant of 30 million euros. The aim is to implement an innovative service-oriented solution for distributed synthetic training (DST) and prototype-based decision support.

The “distributed synthetic simulation environment” draws on a large number of different simulation resources that are geographically separated but connected by a common network infrastructure. The aim is to share the resources of the EU member states in a networked digital ecosystem – similar to the MSaaS (Modeling and Simulation as a Service) architecture developed within NATO. Distributed simulation and training are important prerequisites for EU member states to prepare and qualify their armed forces for modern and complex missions with increasingly complex equipment in the best possible way. The consortium therefore intends to integrate and share existing resources of the Member States, such as simulators or training centers, as well as advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud technology and virtual reality in simulation environments for land, sea, air, space and cyber operations. https://militaeraktuell.at/bundesheer-ehrt-langjaehrige-partner/ FEDERATES will support the joint procurement and pooling of simulation resources and the development of a new marketplace for corresponding services. This should lead to better availability and thus shorter set-up times, lower costs, improved access to training and faster development of future solutions. 32 companies from 14 EU Member States and Norway are united in the consortium, which thus stands for strong and comprehensive European cooperation. The project includes small and medium-sized enterprises as well as large corporations, research institutes and universities. FEDERATES draws on their complementary expertise and experience in simulation and training systems as well as integration and cooperation with military end-users. The multinational core team, which includes Rheinmetall Electronics (Germany) as coordinator and Thales (France), Leonardo (Italy), Indra Sistemas (Spain) and HM EI (Hungary), contributes to the fulfillment of technical and contractual obligations between the European Commission and all participating entities. According to FEDERATES factsheet the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is also part of the consortium.
