A few days ago Rheinmetall announced that the company had won a contract to clear explosive ordnance in the Baltic Sea. This is to be used to create the conditions for connecting an offshore wind farm to the power grid. According to Rheinmetall, the value of the order is in the low double-digit million euro range. The client is the transmission grid operator 50Hertz.

As part of the contract, the contaminated sites at sea are to be probed, identified and documented so that they can subsequently be salvaged. Transportable contaminated sites and remnants of war are handed over to the authorities or blown up on site after recovery.

This is the first major contract for the company in the field of explosive ordnance detection and clearance in the offshore sector. The offshore work to be carried out by Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH began in July of this year and is expected to be completed in May 2025. Rheinmetall is being supported by specialist companies from Germany and Norway. The aim is to clear the area to enable 50Hertz to lay the offshore extra-high voltage cables and install two offshore platforms off the coast of the Fischland-Darß region. Rheinmetall was also keen to emphasize that this project takes environmental contractual aspects into account.
