The Museum of Military History (HGM) with its branches, the Military Aviation Museum in Zeltweg, the bunker facility on the Ungerberg, the patrol boat squadron in Korneuburg and the telecommunications collection in the Starhemberg barracks, set a new visitor record in 2018 with an increase of almost 24,000 people.
“The use of social media has probably contributed to the fact that the record from 2017 has been increased to over 272,000 . The posts by enthusiastic visitors on Facebook, Instagram and other social media from the various museums go around the world and represent priceless advertising. This is not only advertising for the HGM, but also for Austria and Vienna in particular,” says Christian Ortner, Director of the HGM.

A total of 2,662 guided tours were conducted at the Museum im Wiener Arsenal (HGM) in 2018. “We have repeatedly received feedback that the motto ‘Wars belong in museums’ has made many educators less wary of a military approach to history. This trend will hopefully continue in 2019,” continues Ortner. The traveling exhibition “The First World War”, which has been shown at various locations since 2016, also continues to be very popular. The equally popular special exhibition “Protection & Assistance – The Austrian Armed Forces 1955 to 1991” will once again be on display as part of the permanent exhibition from March 3, 2019.
