The Dutch Ministry of Defense is procuring a spare parts package for the Patriot air defence system from manufacturer Raytheon. The purchase is primarily intended to replace parts that were donated to Ukraine last year. The purchase also includes an upgrade that improves the Patriot’s capabilities.
The procured parts include a radar unit, a series of launchers and other spare parts. However, these spare parts are not due to be delivered until 2029. The capability enhancement was purchased after a request to this effect was made by the Ministry of Defense last August.
19 countries
The Netherlands is one of 19 countries worldwide that have the Patriot defense system. The ground-based air defense weapon system can shoot down flying objects. These include helicopters, manned and unmanned aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. The system is also capable of tracking several targets simultaneously and carrying out several interceptions at the same time.
