In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on Europeans to invest more money in its defense. “If Europe wants to survive, it must arm itself,” said Tusk.

According to the politician, Europe must reflect on its own greatness and not bury its head in the sand. “We are a world power, but we must also believe in it.” In addition, the demands of the new US President Donald Trump to increase defense spending to five percent of gross domestic product (GDP) should be taken seriously and understood as an incentive.

The Europeans should not ask what America could do for their security, they should ask what they themselves could do for it,” said Tusk, alluding to the quote by former US President John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Poland itself now spends four percent of its GDP on defense, making it the biggest spender of all EU countries.
