The project for the modernization and mid-life upgrade (MLU) of the Finnish Navy’s Hamina class has received final approval. The Finnish Armed Forces and Patria signed a contract for the modernization and mid-life upgrade of four vessels back in 2018. Patria is the prime contractor, designer and lead system integrator for this project.
The modernization and upgrade will give the Finnish Navy new capabilities to counter maritime threats, defend against attacks at sea, protect sea lines of communication and monitor and secure territorial integrity. With the new torpedo and surface-to-surface missile system and the upgrade of the surface-to-air missile system, the ships are able to operate in the air, above and under water. As part of the new capabilities, Patria delivered the new unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV)-based innovative training target system, which enables flexible and cost-effective anti-submarine warfare training. https://militaeraktuell.at/dann-sind-wir-in-europa-ganz-vorne-dabei/ “Given the changing security situation, it is important now and in the future that the domestic industry has crucial expertise in the critical systems and technologies of national defense. Finland can be proud of the fact that it has maintained its capabilities even in times when many European countries have neglected the development of their defense capabilities and the procurement of material,” says Esa Rautalinko, President and CEO of Patria. Patria delivered the first ship, “Tornio”, to the Finnish Navy in 2020 and the fourth and last modernized ship, “Pori”, in 2022. After the deliveries, the ships were accepted at sea. Together with the future Pohjanmaa-class corvettes, the Hamina-class ships will form the core of the Finnish Navy’s operational capabilities in the 2030s.
