The official swearing-in ceremony for the para-athletes of the Austrian Paralympic Committee was recently held at the Parkhotel Hübner by Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner also bid farewell to the athletes in Paris. From August 28 to September 8, the best athletes will compete at the Paralympic Games in Paris. Austria’s team comprises 24 athletes – eleven of whom are competitive athletes from the Austrian Armed Forces.
This means that the Austrian Armed Forces, as it did at the Olympic Gamesa significant proportion of the Austrian Paralympics team. The athletes will compete in eight sports. I wish all athletes that their dreams and aspirations come true at these Games.”
The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sport with its eleven Army Sports Centers since 1962. Every year, up to 495 people, 20 of whom are disabled athletes, are part of the Army Sports support program. Army sport traditionally provides numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships and also the Paralympic Games. The athletes of the Austrian Armed Forces have already achieved numerous successes and medals for Austria in the past, for example at the last Olympic Games. The Armed Forces athletes have won four medals, including a gold medal by the Austrian Armed Forces platoon leaders Lara Vadlau and Lukas Mähr in the 470 sailing competition.
