After successfully equipping all twelve multipurpose frigates of the Mogami class, Japan has once again opted for Palfinger’s slipway system technology. The new generation of FFM multipurpose frigates will also be equipped with the system for stern launching and recovery of boats and USVs.

While the future FFM ships are visually similar to the Mogami class, they are a consistent further development: the hull will grow by ten meters in length and one meter in width. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is the main contractor, while Palfinger Marine is supplying the Stern LARS systems for the first five units to be built between 2027 and 2036. A further developed version of the proven slipway system will be used, adapted to the requirements of the new design.

“We are proud to have been selected once again as a partner of the Japanese Navy,” explains Torstein Svane, Global Key Account & Segment Manager Governmental, Navy & Coast Guard at Palfinger Marine. “The decision shows that Palfinger has the quality, engineering skills and project expertise to implement even the most demanding projects.”

The Austrian manufacturer’s slipway system minimizes typical risks when launching and recovering boats and unmanned surface systems (USV). It works without hooks, ropes or other mechanical connections and therefore significantly increases safety on board. At the same time, it enables quick and easy one-man operation, even in adverse weather conditions. Thanks to the self-adjusting drive technology, a wide variety of watercraft can be used without conversion.
