At the beginning of the war, the British and French had roughly the same number of aircraft as the Germans, and they were initially mainly used as reconnaissance aircraft and artillery observers. Just like this Caudron G-III, which was photographed by Jules Gervais-Courtellemont in 1914. As an official war correspondent, the French photographer used his autochrome technique to produce numerous images of everyday life at and behind the front, which, together with the color images of other famous photographers such as Paul Castelnau and Hans Hildenbrand, were included in the opulent illustrated book (384 pages) Der Erste Weltkrieg in Farbe by Peter Walther (Taschen Verlag, 2014).
