According to Rheinmetall, the German Armed Forces have selected the German defense manufacturer’s counter small unmanned aerial system for a six-month test and evaluation phase. In May, Rheinmetall Air Defence AG successfully delivered the latest version of the rapidly deployable Counter small Unmanned Aerial System (C-sUAS) system to the German Armed Forces.

Rheinmetall’s C-sUAS system consists of two shelter units that enable rapid deployment thanks to standard trailers and trucks. The sensor unit can be raised automatically and enables the integration of various detection technologies – for example X-band and S-band radar, passive emitter-locator, ADS-B receiver and other sensors if required. An integrated and stabilized 360° electro-optical PTZ sensor offers state-of-the-art inspection and tracking capabilities.

The separate C2 shelter offers a fully-fledged operator station based on the field-proven Oerlikon Skymaster Command and Control System. Skymaster offers a high degree of sensor data fusion and operational functionalities. This includes forwarding to integrated target guidance devices and scalable effectors for various countermeasures. The system can also be connected to higher command levels. The Austrian Armed Forces will extensively test the Rheinmetall C-sUAS system at several locations in Austria, gaining valuable know-how and experience in simulating the protection of air bases, integration with other military units or the protection of C-sUAS in urban areas – a forward-looking approach to countering emerging threats from the air. The highlight will be the public demonstration as part of the “Airpower 2022” and thus at the home airfield of the Austrian Eurofighter, Zeltweg Air Base. Rheinmetall Air Defence will support the project over the next six months in order to make the project as successful as possible.
