Poland is pressing ahead with modernization of its armed forces The Ministry of Defense has ordered 111 Borsuk (“Badger”) infantry fighting vehicles with a total value of 1.6 billion euros from the state-owned armaments company PGZ.

The Borsuk is the first combat vehicle developed and produced entirely in Poland for the country’s armed forces. Deliveries are scheduled to begin this year and be completed by 2029. Including five vehicles already built, Poland will then have 116 Borsuk – enough to equip two mechanized infantry battalions, according to reports from Warsaw.

Polen auf dem Weg zur stärksten Armee Europas

At the contract signing ceremony, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced further investments in the program: “We want to order even more – the 111 are just the beginning.” He emphasized the strategic importance of the project for both the Polish army and the domestic defence industry.

Development of the Borsuk began in 2014 and the first prototype was presented in 2017. The plan is for the new model to replace the outdated Soviet BWP-1 infantry fighting vehicles from the 1960s.
