“The Battle for Burgenland 1921” is the title of a new troop service handbook, which is now available in the troop service web store and in well-stocked bookshops.

The book covers the events of those three and a half months in 1921, from the day the Austrian gendarmerie marched into Burgenland on August 28 until the result of the Ödenburg plebiscite was announced on December 17. During this period, there were armed clashes between the Austrian gendarmerie and the Austrian army on the one side and the Hungarian irregulars on the other. The battle for the youngest province of the Republic was fought on several levels, not only militarily, but also politically and diplomatically. This circumstance is another aspect of this work, which also deals with gang crime, corruption and “snooping” on both sides. In total, the battle for Burgenland resulted in around 150 deaths and 250 injuries. In addition, gendarmes, customs officers, soldiers and irregulars were taken prisoner and more than 150 civilians were interned or taken into police custody. In this book, the nine authors Wolfgang Etschmann, Harald Pöcher, Gabor Orban, Michael Hess, Mario Rauchenbichler, Martin Senekowitsch, Hermann Hinterstoisser, Peter Steiner and editor Jörg Aschenbrenner – all renowned historians and/or authors – trace the events of the time and the people affected by them. Numerous photos, tables and other illustrations round off this work of almost 400 pages, which also contains a map supplement and an extensive appendix. https://militaeraktuell.at/das-alpenjaegerregiment-nr-9-im-burgenlandeinsatz-1921-22/
