Construction of the new Herwijnen radar station begins in the Netherlands. This is the result of the so-called “State Implementation Plan Radar Station Herwijnen”. As part of this plan, the Environmental and Traffic Inspectorate has now issued the final environmental permit. However, objections can still be submitted to the Council of State until April 25.
The new station will raise radar coverage over the Netherlands to the necessary level. Once the Herwijnen station has been completed, the radar defense system should be able to defend the Netherlands adequately in the event of an emergency.
The granting of the environmental permit ends a long preliminary process of internal decision-making, additional health and site investigations and opinions. Gijs Tuinman, State Secretary for Defense, announced the decision to Parliament.
