“We must continue to invest resolutely in the expansion of our armed forces and the defense industry. This is the only way we can deter adversaries and support Ukraine in the long term.” Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans underlined this during his visit to the Czech Republic. He accompanied the Dutch head of state there and took part in the signing of a cooperation agreement between the defense industries of the two countries on the fringes of the visit.

The agreement (Memorandum of Understanding) aims to strengthen the exchange of information and cooperation in the defense sector. According to Brekelmans, the defense industry is a central pillar of collective defense capability. Close cooperation enables companies to pool their respective expertise and develop innovative solutions for complex security policy challenges.

“Our common goal is to build a strong and efficient defense industry. Let us continue to innovate, push boundaries and work together – for a secure future for our countries, Ukraine and our allies,” the Minister appealed.

Ammunition and unmanned systems

The Netherlands and the Czech Republic have been working closely together for some time to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression (-> current news from the Ukraine war). The Netherlands was one of the first countries to make use of a Czech procurement program – it provides for the purchase, production and repair of military equipment for Ukraine. Together with Denmark, both countries also ensure the continuous supply of ammunition.

Meeting with Czech counterpart

Brekelmans also met his Czech counterpart Jana Černochová in Prague. The topics discussed included the role of defense cooperation between the two countries and the upcoming NATO-summit in The Hague. Brekelmans emphasized that the Netherlands will stick to its security policy course even under changed political conditions.
