In view of the growing threat posed by Russia (-> EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas: “If we don’t help Ukraine, we should learn Russian.”) and increasing global uncertainty, the Netherlands is once again increasing its defense efforts by 1.1 billion euros annually.
As announced by Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans and State Secretary Gijs Tuinman, the defense budget will be increased by the corresponding annual amount – a project that was already announced as part of the spring budget planning. It is now also clear how the funds will actually be used.
New mechanized infantry battalion and more combat power
One focus of the investments is therefore on increasing the land-based combat strength: 425 million euros are being spent on preparing the establishment of an additional armored infantry battalion for the land forces – including modern combat vehicles, air defence components and the associated infrastructure. Money is also being invested in the digitalization and expansion of the properties.
Drone procurement and defense
The second major line of investment concerns the acquisition and defense of unmanned systems. A total of 125 million euros is being invested in new reconnaissance drones, armed drone systems and technologies to protect against enemy UAVs. The Hague is thus taking account of the growing importance of drones in modern combat.
Longer operational readiness and better supply
The Ministry of Defense is also providing 83 million euros for the long-term maintenance of military operations. Among other things, the funds will be used to strengthen military transport and the medical supply chain – areas that have already been specifically expanded through “Defensienota 2024”.
Scalable armed forces, more personnel
A further 80 million euros will be made available for a flexible and growing armed forces structure. The funds are to be invested in particular in training, personnel recruitment and organizational development. The aim is to respond more quickly and robustly to rising tensions in Europe. Inflation compensation and currency risk
In addition, the government is reserving 420 million euros to compensate for rising operating costs, exchange rate fluctuations and inflation-related wage adjustments in the military and civilian sectors. In this way, The Hague wants to ensure that the quality and scope of current armaments projects are not jeopardized by cost increases.
