The Dutch NATO-flagship “Zr.Ms. Johan de Witt” and the German frigate “FGS Hamburg” have been anchored in Dublin, Ireland, in recent days. Both ships are part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1). This year, the group is under the command of Dutch Commander Arjen Warnaar and his international staff.

Ireland has a long tradition of military neutrality and is not a member of NATO. However, Ireland and NATO regularly work together as part of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program. This cooperation was discussed during the port visit. The relationship between NATO’s SNMG1 fleet and the Irish Navy was discussed. This took place during discussions with local (maritime) representatives as well as representatives of the Irish Ministry of Defense.

There have been talks between NATO, in the person of Commander Arjen Warnaar, and the Irish side in recent days about cooperation.

Promoting cooperation

Prior to the visit, the NATO fleet carried out a so-called “Passage Exercise” with the Irish naval vessel “LÉ William Butler Yeats”. The ships practiced navigation and communication. This – and the discussion of topics such as freedom of navigation – further promoted cooperation between NATO and Ireland. The ships bid farewell with a traditional “Sailpast”.

SNMG1 is a group of ships from several NATO countries. The naval unit serves to deter, monitor and maintain security in maritime areas. SNMG1 regularly conducts patrols and participates in operations. The composition of SNMG1 varies. This year, the Netherlands is in command and provides several naval vessels and staff officers to support Commander Warnaar.
