Order news from Thales: The French company has been selected by NATO to deliver the third phase of the NCOP (NATO Common Operational Picture) program, called “NCOP-BMD”.
Thales has been a NATO partner since 2012 and has already delivered the first two phases of this program, which is deployed in around 30 NATO command centers. In the third phase, the main focus is on ballistic missile defense (BMD).
The NCOP program collects, aggregates and correlates information during joint operations of land, air and naval units with different types of command and control systems. The aim of the application is to create a single, comprehensive picture of the operational area and to provide NATO commanders with a common operational picture (COP). This should ensure an optimized overview of the operations of the joint forces and enable more efficient decision-making and more effective action.
“Thales has built a wealth of expertise in addressing NATO interoperability challenges since 2015, and this third contract will build on that legacy,” said Gérard Herby, Vice President of Protection Systems at Thales, addressing the long partnership with NATO. “Thales will provide new ballistic missile defense functionalities to improve NATO commanders’ situational awareness with BMD enhancements.”
To meet NATO’s requirements, Thales has developed a software system that gives forces access to multiple COPs. Each common operational picture is displayed in real time and includes key elements such as current operations, logistical and operational capabilities of friendly and enemy forces, and possible action plans for future coordinated efforts. Overall, tactical information from multiple data sources provides enhanced situational awareness of joint force operations, ensuring information superiority across the battlefield.
