Motorola Solutions has successfully equipped the German Navy’s F124 frigate “Sachsen” (-> current news about the German Armed Forces) with a TETRA digital radio solution.

The new communication infrastructure on board is used for reliable communication between the ship security teams, the damage control forces and the operational command of the ship security personnel for the command of the damage control and combat service (SAGD). Its task is to ensure the safety of the soldiers and the readiness of the naval vessel at all times.

The new digital radio solution is based on the DIMETRA X Core Deployable System from Motorola Solutions, a secure radio system developed for the special requirements of military, defence and security organizations. In addition to installing the TETRA solution on the F124 Sachsen, Motorola Solutions has already successfully deployed the solution as a test and training system for the Navy. In combination with portable TETRA handheld radios, including the Motorola Solutions MTP8550Ex, the digital radio solution provides secure and highly available communication on board. It also provides a real-time overview of the current situation of the damage control and combat service on board the ship.

The F124 Sachsen is the first frigate that Motorola Solutions has equipped with TETRA digital radio as part of its contract to build and equip naval vessels. To mark the commissioning, Axel Kukuk, Vice President Europe at Motorola Solutions, presented the project manager BAAINBw and the commander of the “Sachsen” with a TETRA handheld radio painted in the colors of the navy.

“Successful naval operations depend crucially on the safety of personnel and equipment,” said Axel Kukuk. “With the new digital radio solution, the German Navy can digitize its processes on board, increase efficiency during routine operations and respond quickly in emergencies such as fires or accidents.”

The system is fully integrated into the existing infrastructure of the naval platforms and is interoperable with the communication networks of the German Armed Forces and other German authorities and organizations with security tasks (BOS). This also enables communication between ships in port and teams on land as well as between the crews of ships at sea up to a distance of 15 kilometers.
