Following the killing of nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrisadeh at the end of November, Israel is assuming an Iranian attack. However, this is unlikely to be a direct attack; attacks by the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah, which have close ties to Tehran, are more likely.

In 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a secret archive on Iran’s nuclear program and also mentioned the important role of Mohsen Fakhrisadeh. “Remember this name,” Netanyahu said at the time.

On November 27, Mohsen Fakhrisadeh was shot in his car in Ab-Sard, an eastern suburb of the Iranian capital Tehran, and was so seriously injured that he died shortly afterwards in hospital. The nuclear physicist (pseudonym Dr. Hassan Mohseni) was the founder and long-time director of Iran’s illegal nuclear weapons program, which was officially shelved in 2003, and was also a brigadier general of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and an expert in its ballistic missile program, which was partly supported by North Korea and had a range of up to (officially) 2,000 kilometers. Most recently, he headed the research department at the Tehran Ministry of Defense. The killing is reminiscent of the elimination of the former commander of the Quds Force (the foreign arm of the IRGC), Qasem Soleimani, who fell victim to a US drone attack in Baghdad in January. Even now, “martyrdom” is being proclaimed in Iran and public mourning ceremonies are being held. For the Iranian leadership, it is clear that Israel is behind the attack because Fakhrisadeh had been on the “Jerusalem blacklist” for years. In addition, only the arch-enemy Isreal benefits from the death of the nuclear physicist. https://militaeraktuell.at/ich-sehe-die-zukunft-sehr-pessimistisch/ According to an Iranian television report, a “remote-controlled Israeli weapon was used” in the attack and, according to the IRGC, “no terrorists were on site”. “A machine gun and an advanced camera on a Nissan pickup truck were remotely controlled via satellite and AI and 13 shots were fired at Fakhrisadeh’s face. His wife, who was sitting next to him, was not hit and the Nissan exploded shortly after the attack.” As is usual in such events, Israel did not issue a statement on the killing of Fakhrisadeh and the Iranian accusations. However, Europe and the USA also seem to be convinced that Israel is responsible, and the killing of an official of a sovereign state in peacetime has been sharply criticized. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2_-7Mtxhio Israel itself is now assuming an Iranian attack or retaliatory strike, although this is unlikely to be direct, but rather via Iranian “side fronts” such as Hamas or Hezbollah. The north of the small country is apparently seen as particularly at risk. In two talk interviews with Israeli analysts (see YouTube videos) – which are also quite open about their own capabilities and preparations – they are under no illusions. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Jawad Zarif recently also warned states in the region that had recently moved closer to Israel diplomatically with the mediation of US President Donald Trump. Speaking of the US President: Joe Biden’s “transition team” also includes some “committed Valkyries” (self-definition) who are once again leaning much more towards the Palestinians than has been the case in the State Department over the past four years. This factor will certainly be on the radar of the political and military commanders in the region in their next steps and they may want to use the time remaining until the handover to Joe Biden for their next steps.
