Germany’s new Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has made people sit up and take notice with ambitious goals in his first government statement: According to this, Merz wants to Bundeswehr the “strongest army in Europe”.

In his speech, Merz left no doubt about Germany’s continued rearmament. “As the new Federal Government, we are putting ourselves at the service of our country and all of its 84 million citizens,” said Merz, before going into more detail. “The Bundeswehr is to become the conventionally strongest army in Europe.” Because, Merz continued: “We want to be able to defend ourselves so that we don’t have to defend ourselves. Strength deters aggression, weakness invites aggression.”
