The Swedish procurement authority FMV has signed an agreement for the additional procurement of Meteor missiles. The acquisition is part of the international Meteor cooperation with MBDA UK as a supplier.
Meteor is suitable for long-range target engagement and can be operated by the Swedish Air Force from Jas 39 Gripen C/D and E from manufacturer Saab can be used.
According to FMV, the additional procurement serves “to further increase the air defense capabilities of the Swedish Armed Forces both nationally and as part of the NATO“. This procurement is already the third additional order for the system that FMV has placed for the armed forces, says Martin Anderberg, Head of Combat Aircraft Systems at FMV.
Meteor was developed in a collaboration between Sweden, Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, is currently integrated into the JAS 39 Gripen, Rafale and Eurofighter and has been in service in Sweden since 2016. Delivery of the systems is still planned for 2025.
