The Senate hearing of new US President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the next Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, revolved for long stretches around military issues and security policy. And Rubio made it clear several times: the USA’s new main adversary is China!

The senators from both political camps questioned the former senator from Florida at length on the most pressing hotspots: from the Middle East and the drug cartels in Central America to the war in Ukraine (-> current news from the Ukraine war). The future relationship between the USA and NATO was also on the agenda. However, the multiple threats posed by the People’s Republic of China, its communist leadership and head of state Xi Jinping were discussed particularly clearly and across party lines – especially with regard to Taiwan.

Senator Marco Rubio responded to the many, sometimes critical questions with clear and well-founded positions, which were, however, closely aligned with President Trump’s agenda. In the end, Rubio was nevertheless unanimously confirmed with 99:0 votes.
