To improve the protection of aircraft crews Lockheed Martin will in future supplement the existing self-protection system of the German C-130J fleet with so-called DIRCM systems. DIRCM stands for “Directed InfraRed Counter Measures” and comprises systems for protection against enemy missiles with new-generation infrared seeker heads. The seeker head of an approaching missile is specifically deflected by transmitted jamming codes.
With the signing of the contract, the Bundeswehr Procurement Office also commissioned further DIRCM systems for the three A350 government aircraft at the main contractor Lufthansa Technik. Both projects were previously approved by the approved by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag, as were numerous other major projects.

Mit der Einrüstung dieser DIRCM-Systeme in die A350-Flotte stehen der Flugbereitschaft des deutschen Verteidigungsministeriums künftig geschützte Großraum-Langstreckenflugzeuge für den politisch-parlamentarischen Lufttransport zur Verfügung. Das erste Transportflugzeug vom Typ C-130J, auch bekannt als Super Hercules, soll bis 2028 mit einem solchen Selbstschutzsystem ausgestattet werden. Bis 2032 sollen die Maßnahmen bei allen deutschen C-130J abgeschlossen sein.
Six German Super Hercules are part of a binational tactical air transport squadron based in Evreux, France. In addition to joint tactical airlift across the entire logistics spectrum, the squadron’s mission portfolio also includes support for special forces operations and rapid reaction support in crisis situations worldwide.
